Once Seen as Likely Successor to Supreme Leader

Iran's new president, Ebrahim Raisi, has been sworn into office following his election victory in June. Mr. Raisi, a hardline cleric, succeeds Hassan Rouhani, who served as president for two terms. Raisi is a close ally of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and was seen as a likely successor to the 82-year-old leader.

Khamenei Elected President of Iran in 1981

In 1981, after the assassination of President Mohammad-Ali Rajai, Khamenei was elected President of Iran by a landslide vote of 97% in the October 1981 Iranian presidential election. Khamenei served as president for two terms, from 1981 to 1989, and was known for his hardline views on social and political issues.

Raisi's election victory was seen by some as a sign that Iran's hardline conservatives are regaining power in the country. Raisi is expected to take a more confrontational approach toward the West than Rouhani, and he has vowed to crack down on dissent within Iran.
