Operation Began in Response to Rise in Crime Rates

In response to a rise in crime rates, Governor Gavin Newsom launched a California Highway Patrol (CHP) surge operation in the East Bay area two months ago.

The operation, which began on July 11, 2023, has seen an increased presence of CHP officers in Oakland, Richmond, Berkeley, and other East Bay cities.

According to the CHP, the surge operation has been successful in reducing crime rates in the East Bay.

In the two months since the operation began, the CHP reports a 15% decrease in property crimes and a 10% decrease in violent crimes.
